Washington state benefits

No state income tax

Washington has no state income tax. VA disability compensation, military retirement pay, and all other income are not subject to state income tax in Washington — one of nine states with no income tax. Combined with the lack of federal taxation on VA disability (38 USC 5301(a)), this makes Washington one of the most tax-efficient states for veterans drawing federal compensation.

Property tax exemption (income-tiered)

Under RCW 84.36.381, Washington's property tax exemption applies to senior citizens, disabled persons, and disabled veterans (80%+ service-connected or 100% TDIU). The exemption structure has income tiers (specific thresholds vary by county and are adjusted periodically). At higher tiers, the exemption can be substantial. Applied through the county assessor.

Washington Veterans Innovations Program (WVIP)

WVIP, administered by WDVA, provides up to $1,500 in emergency financial assistance to low-income veterans for housing, transportation, utilities, and other essential needs. Funding limited per fiscal year; apply early.

State Veterans Homes

Washington operates four State Veterans Homes: Orting, Port Orchard, Spokane, and Walla Walla. Skilled nursing and dementia care; cost income-based with subsidies for service-connected veterans.

Free Disabled Veteran Lifetime Discover Pass

Washington offers a free Disabled Veteran Lifetime Discover Pass for state park access. Apply through Washington State Parks.

Hiring preferences

Washington state hiring includes veterans' preference. Disabled veterans receive enhanced preference.

Vehicle license fee exemption

Veterans rated 100% disabled may receive vehicle license fee exemptions for one vehicle. Check current eligibility with the Washington Department of Licensing.
