Diabetes Mellitus Type II VA Disability Rating
Diabetes mellitus type II is rated under DC 7913. The rating tracks treatment intensity — diet only, oral medications, insulin — and the presence of complications such as neuropathy, retinopathy, nephropathy, or cardiovascular disease. Vietnam-era veterans with Agent Orange exposure are presumptively service-connected for type II diabetes under 38 CFR 3.309(e).
Rating criteria
| Rating | Criteria |
|---|---|
| 10% | Manageable by restricted diet only. |
| 20% | Requiring insulin and restricted diet, OR oral hypoglycemic agent and restricted diet. |
| 40% | Requiring insulin, restricted diet, and regulation of activities. |
| 60% | Requiring insulin, restricted diet, and regulation of activities with episodes of ketoacidosis or hypoglycemic reactions requiring 1-2 hospitalizations per year. |
| 100% | Requiring more than one daily injection of insulin, restricted diet, regulation of activities, episodes of ketoacidosis or hypoglycemic reactions requiring at least three hospitalizations per year, AND progressive loss of weight and strength or complications that would be compensable if separately evaluated. |
